Cabling is easier to get right while a building is still on the drawing board. Once walls close and ceilings fill with other trades’ work, a missing pathway or poorly placed network closet becomes a much bigger job.
Start with a floor plan and a conversation between the owner, IT team, general contractor and low-voltage installer. The goal is to agree on where connections are needed, how cable will reach them and what documentation will be delivered.
Count the devices, not just the desks
Mark workstations, wireless access points, cameras, door controllers, phones, printers and conference-room equipment. Check planned locations with the people who will use each space. A reception desk, warehouse scanner or ceiling-mounted access point may need a connection far from a standard wall outlet.
Separate confirmed requirements from allowances for future growth. Spare capacity is useful when it has a purpose; an arbitrary extra cable count is harder to defend. Record who approves changes when room layouts or equipment selections move.
Give pathways and closets room in the plan
Review the route from the service entrance to each telecommunications space, and from those spaces to the endpoints. Coordinate sleeves, trays, conduits and access with the construction team before installation starts.
Network equipment also needs space, power, ventilation and service access. Confirm rack locations and cable-management arrangements before treating a small leftover room as the network closet. Where equipment uses Power over Ethernet, review both individual device requirements and the switch’s total power capacity.
Specify the performance you need
Choose cable types and copper or fiber links around the applications, distances and environment. Ask the designer to document those decisions. A proposal should identify cable, connectivity hardware, installation requirements and the tests that will determine acceptance.
Keep responsibility clear for equipment supplied by others. For example, an installed cable can meet its specification while a switch, patch lead or endpoint still limits the final connection. Agree on who handles each part of the system.
Review the work before walls close
Walk the site with updated drawings. Confirm endpoint locations, accessible routes, closet layouts and any changes made in the field. Resolve missing connections while access is straightforward. Labeling should connect each outlet to a recognizable location on the plan and a matching termination in the closet.
Make documentation part of the handoff

- Confirm labels at both ends match the drawings and test reports.
- Record approved changes and any unused connections.
- Collect the relevant warranties and support contacts.
- Store the final records where your IT team and future technicians can find them.
