A camera rollout across several locations needs a common plan, but each site still needs a close look. The same camera position can produce useful video in one building and glare, obstructions or a poor angle in another.
Start by deciding what the business needs to see and who will use the footage. Then turn those needs into a repeatable survey, installation and acceptance process.
Define the job of each camera
“Cover the entrance” leaves room for very different interpretations. Do you need an overview of activity, a useful view of people entering or detail at a specific point? Mark the intended viewing area on the plan and agree on the image detail required.
Review actual lighting and movement at that location. Axis’s guide to surveillance lenses explains how field of view and image usability depend on more than resolution alone. Check sample images under the conditions that matter, including after dark where relevant.
Use one survey format for every site
Record existing cameras, cable routes, network equipment, available power, mounting conditions and any access restrictions. Note who can arrange escorts, lifts or work outside normal hours. Include photos and current drawings so the project team does not have to rediscover these details later.
Group sites by meaningful differences, such as warehouse versus office, new construction versus retrofit, or reliable versus limited connectivity. Standardize where it helps, and document exceptions where a location needs a different approach.
Agree on retention and permissions
Decide how long footage needs to remain available and ask the provider to size the proposed system around that requirement. Confirm how recording settings, storage and connectivity affect the result. Include licensing, recurring charges and expansion costs in the comparison.
Define who can view live video, review recordings, export clips and administer the system. A local manager and a company-wide investigator may need different access. Review camera locations and privacy expectations with the appropriate people before installation.
Pilot before repeating the design
Choose a representative site with enough variety to test the plan. Verify the views during normal operations, find a recorded event and export a usable clip. Check timestamps, camera names and the experience of the staff who will actually search for footage.
Record what changed during the pilot. Update the drawings, installation checklist and equipment assumptions before scheduling the remaining locations. This is also the time to agree on how the team will report exceptions and obtain approval.
Close out each location consistently
- Compare installed views with the agreed coverage plan.
- Verify recording, playback and access permissions.
- Document equipment, camera names, final locations and open issues.
- Train the local contact and identify the central system owner.
- Record support contacts and a process for checking system health.
Schedule a review after staff have used the system. Changes in shelving, landscaping or daily operations can affect a previously useful view.
